Jean Heaslip - St Mary, Goldington
Jenny Thompson,  writes:
“Sadly, I have to tell you that, our dear friend, Jean Heaslip passed away on Sunday 1st February after an illness of several months.
Jean learned to ring at Wilden in the 1950’s but had been a ringer at Goldington and a member of Tailenders for the last 20 years.
She would have celebrated her 90th birthday in May this year.
Even though her health was not the best she would always climb the steps, however difficult, to get to the ringing chamber, and loved to ring a touch of Grandsire Doubles (or April Day when appropriate!)  Jean’s last outing with Tailenders was last summer before she became very ill.
Jean was a remarkable lady and an inspiration to many of us.”

Jean’s funeral will be on Monday 9th March at 11.30am at Bedford Crematorium, Norse Road, Bedford, MK41 0RL and afterwards at The Bluebell Pub, Putnoe Road Bedford to which everyone is welcome.

Peter Pratt - All Saints, Houghton Regis
This message was received from the All Saints, Houghton Regis bell ringers on 18 February:

“We have just been informed that Peter Pratt, a long time bell ringer, passed away very suddenly. We will let you know of funeral arrangements as soon as we receive them.”

Celia Pymont adds:

Peter’s funeral is at Oakfield Gardens Crematorium, Steppingley on Thursday 19th March at 11.00. John, his son (who is also a bell ringer), has asked us to ring the handbells at the beginning of the service.

Peter was born in Houghton Regis and following the family business had a butchers shop in Hillborough Crescent.  He learnt to ring the bells in his teens along with his cousin Barry Meacham, who was our tower captain when I first started ringing, he was aged 91 when he passed away.

Peter was a elected in April 2009  and remained a member of the Association until  the end of 2021.

Ring a First in February - Congratulations!
We had a bumper crop of February 'Firsts' this year! Well done to everyone who achieved a first  - we had examples of firsts in methods, ringing down, treble bobbing, ringing the treble to a touch, ringing tenor behind, plain hunting on eight, first touch as conductor and firsts in Quarter Peals. There were over 50 different ringers taking part in 29  separate performances which were published on Bell Board as firsts.

The young ringers excelled themselves with some impressive multiple firsts - the Young Ringers practice at Campton on  8th February shows that each of the eight youngsters rang at least one first during the afternoon and some went on to do even more that afternoon and during the month. Well done all of you!

Well done to four ringers who rang their first ever Quarter Peal - Les MIller - tenor behind to Grandsire Doubles at Silsoe, Gillian Marshall-Davies - treble to Plain Bob Doubles at Campton, Dan Warner (young ringer)  and Joe Warner (young ringer) - who both rang the tenor behind to Plain Bob Doubles in separate Quarters at Maulden. Also a shout out to Paul Clarkson who rang his first Quarter Peal on a working bell - the treble to Grandsire Doubles at Bromham.

Although not specifically organised as a February First, congratulations to Dean De-Matteis who rang his first peal of Lessness Surprise Major at Campton on 23 Feb BellBoard

The performances have been linked as an event on  BellBoard and reproduced here so you can click on each one and see who rang what, in order of most recent back to  the start of the month.

Thanks to over 250 of you who have now renewed your membership with the Association and reviewed your communication preferences for 2026. We are very grateful.

There are still just over 50 members who haven't  renewed yet. If you haven't completed your return and paid your 2026 subscription yet please do so as soon as possible using the link in the original  3rd December renewal email,  this has all the instructions you need to update your details and preferences (to receive comms and request a printed annual report) - and pay your annual subscription.

If you can't find this email you'll need to sign in with your email address using the Association's direct secure account home page link -  http://membermojo.co.uk/bacbr
Further information to help you is on the Association website here Bedfordshire Association of Church Bell Ringers

Tower Contacts could help us by reminding their member ringers to do this, maybe members still to respond are those who have previously expressed a preference not to receive these Updates!

Got a new email address? - if you've changed your email address from the original one you gave us (and you haven't already updated this in your Member Mojo account), you'll still need to use the original one to get into Member Mojo, then you can update your details with your new address. If you can't receive emails to your old address anymore then let us know and we can set it to the new one for you. The system is driven by your email address not passwords, so please keep this up to date through out the year as necessary.

News from the CCCBR
Central Council of Church Bell Ringers

2026 Westley Award for Belfry Maintenance and Improvement

Towers and bells in good condition will make the environment for ringing more pleasant, easier for ringers to develop their skills and, in particular help new recruits.
Are you relatively new to finding your way around bell installations? Perhaps you are gaining experience in what to check upstairs in a tower, what may be unusual and interesting, or in poor condition and likely to cause ringers difficulties while ringing?  Hopefully, you are starting to make some improvements and share your experiences with others.
The Ringing 2030 Environments Workgroup of the Central Council of Church Bell Ringers is launching the 2026 award for people who have recently become involved in belfry maintenance and improvement, developing their own skills and helping others to do so. The award will be presented at the CCCBR AGM in Rugby in September 2026. The winner will receive £100, kindly donated by Westley Group, and a certificate. Full details and an application form will be on the CCCBR website here:
https://cccbr.org.uk/about/workgroups/ringing-2030-environments/westley-award-2026

The new 'UniversityRinging.org' website is live!
This is the first of a suite of website being developed by the Young Ringers for Ringing 2030 Workgroup as part of the Young Ringers Hub initiative. The Young Ringers Hub will be a one stop shop for young ringers from school age to age 30 and consists of University Ringing Under 18s, Resources for Leaders and a Development pathways site that aims to promote the development of young ringers.
In line with the CCCBR’s Ringing 2030 vision, the project has been adapted and modernised so it sits alongside CCCBR branding and the wider Young Ringers work. It is PC and mobile friendly.
This University Ringing site is a simple, friendly directory of university bell ringing societies and other locations where there aren’t established societies in the UK and beyond. It’s designed to help students easily discover local ringing, keep information accurate and up to date and celebrate the breadth of university ringing and help it grow.
Where there isn’t an established student ringing society, we have included information by location that encompass academic institutions. We have referenced the list of UK universities by enrolment to make sure we cover as many institutions as possible.
The site will be maintained and continuously improved by the Young Ringers workgroup within the CCCBR.
You can look at the site here https://universityringing.org/
