The Association’s first President was the Venerable Frederick Bathurst (1827-1910), who was the Archdeacon of Bedford from 1873 to 1910. He was educated at Winchester College and Merton College, Oxford. He made six appearances in first-class cricket, representing Oxford University Cricket Club and the Marylebone Cricket Club between 1846 and 1849. He married Catherine Georgiana Moore, daughter of Rev. Calvert Fitzgerald-Moore, a Chaplain to the King. He held incumbencies at Diddington, Cambs. (1857-1874), Biggleswade (1874-1884) and Holwell, Herts. (1884-1902). It was during his tenure at Biggleswade that the association was formed in 1882. . 1882 is obviously a significant year for the Association, but what else happened then ? Notably Sybil Thorndike, A.A. Milne, and Virginia Woolf were all born in that year, along with Robert Hichens – the quartermaster who was at the wheel when the RMS Titanic hit the iceberg in 1912 !
