In 1977 James W Yates, an Ampthill ringer at the time, gave the Association a large pottery jug as the trophy for a ‘Raising and Lowering in Peal’ challenge. The trophy was made at the Wenfordbridge Pottery in Cornwall and is now more commonly known as ‘Jims Jug’; apparently its capacity is 7 pints! Jim’s challenge was to encourage bands to raise and lower six or eight bells in peal and be judged for good striking throughout.
